| The MeadowLark
was ketch-rigged, 33 feet long and instead of a keel or
centerboard, had leeboards
like the Dutch Boier yachts, wing like things that are
alternately dropped and lifted when tacking. The draft
of the boat was 15 inches, a wondrous fact in a 33-foot
sailboat and a statistic which opened a world of cruising
grounds that seldom see a sailboat. |
This classic
example of a 33 MeadowLark needs some TLC to bring her
back to her glory. She has recently
been
used and has not been neglected to the point of
no return. This should be on the must see list of anyone
who is looking for a rewarding project that will surely
cause a stir in any harbor sailed.
It is reported by the owner
that the headroom, sitting, as he remembers Herreshoff's
plan, is 4'8". The deck is plywood over white oak
frames with fiberglass cloth covering. The deck is tight.
The boat needs to be caulked (slick seam, not cotton or
oakum). It needs to be sanded and painted, inside and
out, and the interior needs to be cleaned and painted,
as does the engine. The boat is made of the very best
materials, white oak framing, hard yellow pine bottom,
cedar sides with white oak top board for the leeboards.
Sitka spruce masts and new sails with a jib furler. The
interior contains two forward bunks and one large bunk
on the port side and a porta-potti. There is a compass
that is in the boat on the bunk. There is a 2 burner alcohol
stove that is not in the boat presently. The boat is covered.
The sails and stove are in storage. The details of its
construction are available to be seen in "Sensible
cruising designs", by L. Frances Herreshoff. |
